Ok guys. The risk assessment for the walk has been carried out. Yesterday – me and my friend walked 20 miles from Wath to Dunford Bridge along the Trans Pennine Trail to risk assess the route. The majority of it is flat however; there are 2 sections that do worry me slightly.

The first is on the way to Silkstone where you have to go up and over the Silkstone tunnels. At this point the hill is quite steep, although not too bad, but at the second tunnel there are some good-sized rocks that stick out of the ground, which could easily trip people up.

Also as we head down into Oxspring village the hill is a very steep dirt track. This could be a problem if it is raining as much as it was last week.

Another problem is the distinct lack of toilet facilities en route. Apart from a couple of pubs there are none at all. The pubs might not let us just stop and use them especially if we are very muddy and that is even if the pubs are open. One of them probably won’t be as it will be early morning when we get there. This is not so much of a problem for the boys but it will be for the girls.

After having quite a few people drop out over the past 2 weeks and seeing how difficult the route is in places we were thinking about halving it and only have a sponsored 20 mile walk instead. The distance is putting off a lot of people and I think that once everyone gets to Dunford Bridge and sees the taxi we’ll lose a few more. Especially with the thought of having to climb that hill at Oxspring on the way back at around mile 30.

We walked 18 miles the week before but got lost and went a different way. That route was very difficult to follow as it was very poorly signposted but we weren’t that tired when we finished it. The walk we did yesterday was only 2 miles longer but was a lot harder than we thought. It has better sign posts and there is less chance for people to get lost. The start and end are almost flat but that middle section is difficult especially when you’re tired.

I think that if we make it a 20-mile walk we may get a few more people taking part. What does everyone think?

We have managed to secure a free taxi transfer from Dunford Bridge back to Wath for everyone taking part in the sponsored walk.

The service will be provided by Keith at K.A Travel. He is fully insured and has 1 to 16 seater minibusses for Corporate Travel, Contract Work, Airports, Weddings, Sporting Events.

If ever you hear of someone needing a taxi service like this, please pass his details on. He really is doing us a massive favour and the least I can do is spread the word about his company.

Its not long now before the walk. We have started to ask for sponsorship. If anyone wants to join or knows anyone else that wants to take part me know and I can send out a sponsor form.

I also need to know how many people need the lift back to Wath from Dunford Bridge. This is so Keith knows what size vehicle to take. The taxi is only for people so anyone taking dogs needs to arrange their own transfer.

Here is the route of the walk (if it works)
