PostSubject: emergency vets   Fri Dec 03, 2010 11:40 pm

its 11.30 pm just got back in from dewsbury where the out of hours vets that vets for pets use is based.i think vets for pets in Barnsley are brilliant but the only downside is they don't open on a night.
at 9.00 i looked at maddie and her eye was swelled i thought she might have got some ice in it as she had been outside.half an hour later both eyes and her mouth were ballooning her face was twice its size so off we went 2hours an injection and £94.00 poorer we are back.she had a severe allergic reaction to no idea what but when we have no idea what caused it how can we stop it happening again .thank goodness its my hubby's day off or i would have been stuck. Shocked

Poor maddie, poor you and poor bank account!
Something similar happened to Nancy when we went on holiday and my mother nearly had a heart attack, Nancy was fine when my mother set off walking to our house and by the time she got to ours - about 20 minute walk, her eyes were shut. Shocked the vet gave her some fucithalmic (not spelt right but sounds right), that was caused by grass pollen.
It could just be a one off, i wouldnt worry too much, Nancy has never had another attack and she spends hours out in the garden.

Hope you and Maddie have recovered well from your trauma.

Very sorry to read about Maddie. Hope everything goes on OK now.
These vets have got us. Back in the Midlands, Dinah started screaming with pain whenever she moved. My vet was closed so a trip to the emergency vet - fortunately not far away. He couldn't even guess what was the problem but gave her some strong painkillers and took a lot of money from my bank account.
In all fairness, it took my regular vet some time with quite a few tests to find out what was wrong.
Thank Goodness for PetPlan.

your are right Richard it was £80.00 before we got through the door.things like that are not covered by insurance but it is good job we had insurance for our last dog tia as she had quite a few ops and the bill from each was nearly £1000.00 sorting the insurance out was the first thing we did when we got maddie.
her face is a lot better this morning there was one highlight though Julie a lovely tanned australian vet Wink

Aww bless - we used to get a lot of dogs with swollen faces in at the vets. Mainly in summer though from bee / wasp stings. A lot of them were boxers and sometimes labradors. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it happens again ring the vets - explain whats happend and they can then advise you if it worth taking her in or to try some piriton for kids.

affraid affraid affraid OMG - I hate spiders. A lady I used to go to college with was once bitten by a normal house spider - she wasn't scared of them and she picked it up to move it off her step and it bit her. Then people say 'its only a spider' scratch

Something very similar happened to Archie earlier this year - he began rubbing his eyes and within a few minutes they were both swelled so much he could hardly open them, and his muzzle also swelled up, he looked like elephant dog bless him pale

This was around 10.30pm, so i rushed him off to Attercliffe at Sheffield to the PDSA emergency vet who, like you say, took £109 from me just for the vet to look at him!! affraid

The vet said he has probably eaten a wasp or something (he was always chasing bees and wasps and ants etc) and was having an allergic reaction so he gave him an injection of steroid (another £18). I took him home where he proceeded to have what appeared to be a prolonged fit - screaming and howling and rolling around irratically!! So back I went to PDSA, by this time it was around 1am, where I was told he'd had a reaction to the steriod injection! Rolling Eyes So he needed sedatives (another £9) to calm him down.

And my vet wasn't even remotely attractive!! Mad
